Themes

How CutClub themes work, where they come from, and what makes a good one.

The theme is the matchup. A good prompt turns a music game into an argument. A boring one gets you "Mr. Brightside" every week.

What makes a good theme

The best themes are specific enough to rule things out but open enough to surprise you. "Songs for the afterparty" is fine. "A song your villain would drive home to" is better. The more unusual the prompt, the less likely someone plays the obvious pick.

Where themes come from

Write your own. Hosts and players can submit theme ideas before or during the season. You know your club -- you know what's going to cause problems.

Use the theme library. CutClub has a curated collection of prompts you can borrow. Good for when you need to fill out a schedule or you've run dry on ideas.

Use the AI theme generator. The generator surfaces deep-cut prompts built to start arguments. Use it when your brain goes blank. It's better than whatever you were going to submit.

Theme timing

Themes drop at the start of each matchup week. Players see the prompt when they open the app and the submission clock starts from there. Themes aren't revealed early -- part of the fun is not being able to pre-plan.

Can players suggest themes?

Yes. Hosts control whether players can submit theme suggestions. If it's enabled, suggestions get collected and the host can approve them for the season schedule.
